What is Cambria?

Cambria is a natural, quartz surfacing product that has a variety of uses in the home or business such as countertops, floor tile, vanities, fireplace surrounds, wet bars, showers, etc. Cambria is pure, natural quartz, one of the hardest and most common minerals on Earth. Some of Cambria’s designs have the natural look and feel of granite, marble and other quarried stones, but features superior performance because of its strength and durability. It is nonporous and will not absorb food and liquids like granite does. And best of all, it is maintenance-free.

Granite is the signature rock of the continents. More than that, granite is the signature rock of the planet Earth itself. The other rocky planets—Mercury, Venus and Mars—are covered with basalt, as is the ocean floor on Earth. But only Earth has this beautiful and interesting rock type in abundance.

Solid Surface

If you know the names "Corian" or "Staron", then you have been introduced to solid surface countertop material.

Solid surface is a non-porous low-maintenance countertop surface. It can mimic the appearance of stone, wood and other naturally occurring materials, and can be joined invisibly by a trained craftsman. Typically manufactured in sheet form for fabrication into finished countertops, solid surface can also be cast into a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower pans and bathtubs. Sheet goods can also be heated and bent into three-dimensional shapes using a process called thermoforming, which adds to the versatility of the product. Color and design flexibility are key factors when choosing engineered composites over natural stone.

Laminate

Laminate has been around for many decades.  You have two basic materials: the laminate surface itself and the base.

The base is typically particle board or another wood-based material onto which the laminate is applied.

The laminate surface is largely made up of paper, not plastic. It is a sandwich with these layers, from top to bottom:

  • Melamine Resin - Transparent. Protects everything else below it.

  • The Overlay or Wear Layer - Paper similar to the paper used to make coffee filters or tea bags. Also carries some melamine resin and aluminum oxide with it.

  • Decorative Layer - This is the layer that has the color and design.

  • Kraft Paper - Similar to paper in grocery bags, the Kraft paper layer forms the core of the laminate surface. This paper is hardened with resins.
